Joanne B. Mulcahy teaches at the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Her essays have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including The Stories That Shape Us: Contemporary Women Write About the West and The Folklore Muse: Poetry, Fiction and Other Reflections by Folklorists. She has won a New Letters Nonfiction Award and grants from the British Council, the Alaska Humanities Forum, and the Oregon Council for the Humanities.

“We write to taste life twice,” wrote Anaïs Nin. When writing about food, this is literally true. Food triggers sensory memory and shapes and reflects family life, cultural identity, and community. In this workshop, we’ll write from our experiences at the table, in ritual and celebration, and about the people, cultures, and places that sustain us personally or that we have documented. We’ll explore the growing subgenre of literary nonfiction focused on food, including the memoir, essay, literary journalism, and travelogue. Writers of all levels are welcome.
